Bardzo ładnie widać to na obrazie Albrechta Durera z ok. 1503 roku, The Great Piece of Turf.  Do tego obrazu jeszcze  wrócę.
Najwcześniejsze opisy trawników pochodzą z początku XIII wieku. Np. Albert Magnus opisał zalety trawnika otaczającego ogródek ziołowy w średniowiecznym klasztorze. Doceniano wtedy kontrast między niskim trawnikiem i rosnącymi pośrodku ziołami i kwiatami. W XIV wieku Bocaccio opisywał trawniki przeznaczone do rozgrywania turniejów i gier.
A ponieważ cięcie kosą pozostawiało trawę zbyt nierówną w opinii władcy, do cięcia zaangażowano kilkadziesiąt kobiet, które narzędziem podobnym do nożyczek codziennie strzygły trawę.

Artelis.pl A brief history of the lawn. The author of this article is Sebastian KrajewskiHow did it happen that often can not imagine a garden without the monotonous green, boring plane called the lawn. We spend many hours each year of work and money to look like myself dreamed that the least like his ancestor, the ordinary pasture. The first trampled lawns and pastures were fertilized naturally by grazing sheep. Of course, not made up exclusively of grass, accompanied by other herbaceous plants. Very nicely seen on the picture of Albrecht Durer about 1503 years, The Great Piece of Turf. For this image I will come back. The earliest descriptions of the lawn from the beginning of the thirteenth century. For example, Albert Magnus described the advantages of the lawn surrounding the herb garden in a medieval monastery. Appreciated if the contrast between the low-growing grass and herbs and flowers in the middle. In the fourteenth century, described Bocaccio lawns for playing tournaments and games.Probably the first modern lawn was founded in India around the temple of the Taj Mahal in the seventeenth century modern in the sense that the grass planted intentionally and deliberately so as not to obscure the view of the temple and no animals were allowed to remain on the lawn so as not to contaminate it with their droppings. Thus, height-adjustable grass had to deal with a man. And because grass cutting scythe That left too rough in the opinion of the ruler, cutting tens of engaged women who have a tool similar to scissors every day strzygły grass. But back to the image of Europe and Durer. Trained eye will recognize the image even more than a dozen species of plants and, of course, not just grass. Such were the lawns in the sixteenth century. Grass height was adjusted wypasając animals, or by using short scythes. New lawns assumed solely by "transplanting" patches of turf, which is excised and transferred to a new location. Only in the eighteenth century were established lawns by sowing the first seeds of wild grasses. Scientific research into the grass to establish lawns only took off in 1895 in the United States (Olcott Gardens Turf). The biggest breakthrough in the history of the lawn was in 1830. Englishman Edwin Budding invented the reel mower. Mowers of this type are still used for lawns of the highest quality such as on golf courses and sports fields. Well you can see it on football fields, where the two-tone striped turf was created through the use of said mower, passing time in one time in the other direction. Around 1900 was the first lawn mower. But the year 1830 I would be the beginning of the modern era in the history of the lawn, which has become probably the most popular element of the majority of newly established gardens and parks in Europe and the United States.---Sebastian Krajewski, a gardener by profession, occupation and avocation www.ogrodniksebastian.pl
