Autorem artykułu jest M&JZnana nam jest przede wszystkim jako roślina, która rośnie w doniczce. Hortensję rzadko spotyka się jako ozdobę mieszkania mimo to, że jest bardzo efektywnym kwiatem.
Pochodzi z Japonii, a dawno temu uprawiana była w krajach dalekiego wschodu. W Europie pojawiła się dopiero pod koniec XVIII w. W Polsce najbardziej znaną i uprawianą odmianą hortensji jest hortensja ogrodowa zwana Hyndrngea macrophylla.
Kwiatostany tej rośliny często złożone są z kwiatów dwojakiego rodzaju. Jedne z nich te bardziej niepozorne wytwarzają nasiona pozostałe decydują o urodzie każdej z odmian bo to one kształtują podobne do płatków, ogromne wielobarwne działki kielicha. Pozostałe elementy tego kwiatu ulegają redukcji dzięki czemu kwiaty są płonne i niezdolne do zawiązywania nasion. Natomiast u niektórych odmian występują one nielicznie na obrzeżach baldachowo spłaszczonego kwiatostanu. Najczęściej jednak zdarza się tak, że wypełniają one cały kulisty i okazały kwiatostan, który może osiągnąć średnicę nawet do 20 cm.
Odmiana hortensji, która występuje w Polsce czyli hortensja ogrodowa rzadziej kwitnie na biało, częściej natomiast na różowo bądź niebiesko. Istnieją również odmiany o różnych kombinacjach kolorystycznych między innymi: ciemna czerwień z zielenią oraz purpurowe. Bardzo ciekawym zjawiskiem, który możemy zaobserwować w tych kwiatach to zmiany barwy z różowej na niebieską i odwrotnie. To zjawisko przyczynia się do tego, że na Podbeskidziu kwiat ten otrzymał nazwę "kawalerskiego serca".
Z czym związane jest to zjawisko zmian koloru? Otóż z tym, że jeżeli gleba ma silny odczyn zakwaszenia to hortensja przybiera barwę niebieską, natomiast w przypadku gleby o mniejszym zakwaszeniu kwiat przybiera barwę - różową. Ogrodnicy, którzy posiadają odpowiednią wiedzę na ten temat mają możliwość manipulowania barwami poprzez stosowanie odpowiednich ściółek i nawozów.
Ważną rzeczą by utrzymać kolor lekko błękitny tego kwiatu jest podlewanie jej roztworem ałunu lub też preparatem, który ma w swoim składzie siarczan glinu. Jednak w przypadku hortensji o kolorze białym stosowanie tych wszystkich zabiegów nie spowoduje wywołania koloru.
W ogrodach hortensje często kwitną od czerwca lub lipca, aż do jesieni, Hortensja jest rośliną mało odporną na niskie temperatury, powinna być również bardzo często podlewana oraz wymagają odpowiedniego cięcia. Zaletą tej rośliny jest możliwość jej zasuszania, jednak nie jest to łatwe i nie każdemu może sie udać. Głównym błędem jest zbyt duża niecierpliwość w przy wyborze momentu ścinania kwiatostanu. Odpowiedni momentem na ścinanie kwiatostanów jest sytuacja, w której kwiaty już dobrze rozwiną i wybarwią. Kwiat ten po ususzeniu wspaniale zachowa kolor i kształt, jednak w przypadku żywych kwiatów, które są zbyt wcześnie ścinane zawijają się i kurczą, co powoduje, że trącą bardzo dużo ze swojego uroku.
