Niska krzewinka o ścielących się i zakorzeniających, cienkich pędach. Liście zimozielone, ustawione naprzeciwlegle, całobrzegie. Kwiaty dość duże, 5-krotne, niebieskie, na wzniesionych do góry pędach. Owocem jest podłużna, skórzasta torebka. Barwinek darniowato pokrywa powierzchnię gleby. Pędy płonne pełzające, cienkie, kwiatowe wzniesione do wysokości 15 cm. Liście skórzaste, eliptyczne, nagie, błyszczące, długości do 4 cm. Kwiaty niebieskie lub jasnofioletowe, wyrastające pojedynczo z kątów liści, osadzone na długich szypułkach. Korona lejkowata, zrosłopłatkowa, średnicy 2,5-3 cm. Kwitnie w maju-sierpniu. Od dawna uprawiany jest w parkach, w ogrodach i na cmentarzach jako roślina okrywowa i rabatowa. Wytrzymały na niskie temperatury. Najlepiej rośnie na glebach próchnicznych, dość żyznych i świeżych, w miejscach zacienionych, lecz również w pełnym słońcu. Obok bluszczu i runianki, jest jedną z najcenniejszych krzewinek okrywających glebę pod koronami drzew. Znane są odmiany o różnym zabarwieniu kwiatów i pstrolistne. Rozmnaża się przez podział roślin oraz przez sadzonkowanie w końcu lata. Odległości sadzenia 10-15 cm. Barwinek zaliczany jest do roślin chronionych.
